My Story

CM Sinclair is a crime fiction author living in the Scottish Borders. Although he is now based in Scotland, much of his inspiration is drawn from Essex, where he grew up. This setting serves as the backdrop for his debut novel and the “Robertson and McLean” series.

Calum, as he is known, began writing during his teenage years. Initially, his ambitions were centred on filmmaking, a passion that continues to influence his creative pursuits. In 2007, he attended the Met Film School at Ealing Studios, where he directed two student films. His filmmaking achievements include writing and directing “Deserter”, a 30-minute film starring Steven Hartley, released in 2010.

In 2014, as Calum Mackinnon, he authored and illustrated a children’s novel titled “The Cure for Bad Behaviour”. Despite this foray into children’s literature, his dedication to film persisted, leading to the development of numerous screenplays and efforts to secure funding for a feature film.

A pivotal moment came after a chance encounter with a bestselling author at an Edinburgh Writers Club event. This meeting encouraged Calum to adapt his screenplays into novels. The first of these efforts was the unpublished novel “The Syrian”.

During the pandemic, Calum was inspired to embark on a new creative direction: writing a crime fiction series. This led to the creation of the “Robertson and McLean” novels, beginning with “Blood of the Father”. The book holds special significance, as it is dedicated to the memory of his father, Neil Mackinnon, who passed away during its writing.

The second book in the series, “A Family of Sinners”, is scheduled for release in the coming months. The third instalment, “Death Sentence”, is expected to be published early next year.
